He! Is! GROOT! Now in His Own Solo Series!


This June, the Marvel Universe’s most famous tree is starring in his very own series! That’s right, GROOT #1 is coming – and you will NOT want to miss it! Comics rising star Jeff Loveness (Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Amazing Spider-Man Special) joins Marvel newcomer Brian Kesinger (Disney Animation) for an epic galactic road trip of cosmic proportions!

It’s not all fun and games when, for the first time in years, Groot has been separated from his pal and translator Rocket Raccoon and forced to make it on his own in the big, scary galaxy. Armed with just the words “I”, “Am” and “Groot,” he’s about to embark on a new kind of adventure.

“We have the kinds of wacky situations a giant space tree can find himself in,” series Editor Devin Lewis says, “but we’re also striving to show what makes Groot one of the noblest and wisest characters in the Marvel Universe. There are as many feels in this book as there are chuckles, and it’s going to surprise people.”

Explosions! Intergalactic Hitchhiking! Aliens! Space Sharks! And that’s just the first issue, True Believer! Execs explain the rationale behind Amazon buying Twitch


If yesterday’s news that online megaretailer Amazon had purchased streaming game footage hub Twitch for $970 million took you by surprise, you’re not alone – not by a long shot. However, a recent Time interview with Amazon vice president of games Michael Frazzini and Twitch CEO Emmett Shear explains exactly why the two companies are now joined at the hip.

When asked why the acquisition makes sense, Shear explained that both Amazon and Twitch “have a shared vision for the gaming industry.” Further, Shear points out that Amazon is willing to give Twitch the freedom to operate as it always has, only with the not insignificant resources of the world’s largest online retailer backing the streaming site’s moves.

Frazzini, in turn, underlined Amazon’s ongoing campaign to forcibly insert itself into the world of gaming. “Obviously if we’re going to be in the devices business, we have to be thinking hard about games,” Frazzini told Time. “And at the center of that is the customer experience, which is what’s so interesting about Twitch for us. Twitch has that same point of view. They think long term.”

Above all, like most corporate maneuvering, this acquisition is driven by potential profit. As Time points out, Amazon’s motivations for entering the gaming space hinge on the average gamer’s purchasing patterns. As the article put it, “Amazon loves people who buy games through Amazon, said Frazzini, because gamers tend to come back and buy all sorts of other things.”


Dead Island to become big screen flick

Occupant plans to attach a filmmaker and fast track the project for a production start in Q1 of 2015.

It was the first full-length day of Comic-Con, and a little franchise called The Walking Dead was featured in its own panel. This panel was focused specifically on the comic book (the TV show will have its own moment in the sun tomorrow). Writer/creator Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard were both present, along with editor Sean Maciewicz, to discuss recent big developments and the future of the series.

Kirkman touched on several subjects pertaining to the series’ lead protagonist, Rick. Rick’s anger streak seen in recent issues can be chalked up to the tenuous state of society in the aftermath of “All Out War” and the need for every member to perform their jobs. Kirkman doesn’t regret introducing the plot twist that saw Rick lose his arm, though he admitted it does cause certain practical challenges in terms of how Rick can hold and use various objects. While he was obviously noncommittal about the idea of killing off Rick, Kirkman did note that the series could very easily survive past Rick’s death.


Regarding Negan, the main villain of the series for the past couple years, Kirkman voiced an interest in fleshing out the character’s back-story. However, that would likely occur within the comic and not in the form of a tie-in novel like with The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor. Kirkman also said to expect Negan to show up in the TV series eventually, but not anytime soon. Interestingly, Kirkman mentioned that Negan is based on a real-life person, though he was reluctant to specify whom.

Kirkman reiterated a topic he’s touched on in the past when he said he has no plans to reveal the source of the zombie plague, even calling the idea “boring.” However, he did reserve the right to change his mind a few years down the road. As of right now, Kirkman has the series loosely plotted out for 150-200 issues.


One thing Kirkman and Adlard seemed very much in agreement about was that they don’t allow the TV show or video games to affect how they portray the characters. Adlard noted that he feels a sense of pride whenever the show casts an actor who looks similar to his character designs (mentioning Danai Gurira’s Michonne specifically), but that he only draws the characters as he envisioned them. Kirkman said he has no plans to introduce characters created in the show or games, such as Daryl Dixon or Clementine.

Don’t expect the comic to shift away from the usual cast to focus on other areas of the world and how they’re dealing with the ongoing zombie apocalypse. If the setting of the series changes, it’ll only be because the core cast are moving.


Finally, Kirkman did offer one TV-related tidbit. He confirmed that while the spinoff to the TV series won’t be officially announced at SDCC this week, an announcement will be coming soon. That series is expected to premiere in 2015.


‘I Am Groot!’ Says Diesel


Marvel has finally made Vin Diesel’s voice role as Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy official.
After months of teasing and misdirection (by both Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Diesel, on his Facebook page and in interviews), Marvel finally confirmed the Fast and the Furious /Riddick star will be rounding out the Guardians team as the voice-actor for tree-creature Groot (negotiations were leaked in August, see "Vin Diesel in ‘Guardians’").
Diesel will join Bradley Cooper, who has been cast as Rocket Raccoon, in the voice-over booth.  Diesel has lent his signature baritone growl for vocal work before, on several video games as well as for the title role in the 1999 animated film The Iron Giant.
Guardians of the Galaxy follows the unlikely intergalactic team of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot, as they are forced to join together to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions.  Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy will release on August 1, 2014.
