The next step toward a Locke & Key feature film has been taken, as Universal has optioned the property with superstar writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as producers along with Bobby Cohen and IDW CEO Ted Adams, according to Hollywood Reporter. News of a feature film with Kurtzman and Orci attached had leaked out last fall, but Universal’s involvement is a big move forward.
The property has gotten close to the small screen, but Fox passed on the series after a pilot was shot (see "‘Locke & Key’ Trailer"). Five volumes of the comics by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez have been released by IDW Publishing.
At the Marvel TV panel at the New York Comic Con Joss Whedon appeared via video to announce that he and Marvel are developing a live-action S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, and that Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel movies (and shorts), will be, according to Whedon, "headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was."
No word on how Coulson, who made an appearance at the NYCC panel, will be brought back from the dead (it certainly appeared that Loki dispatched Agent Coulson to his final reward in The Avengers). Marvel’s Jeph Loeb would only say that Joss Whedon was writing the script for the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot with his usual crew that includes his brother Jed Whedon and Jed’s wife Maurissa Tancharoen.
ABC has already ordered a pilot episode of the new Whedon-penned S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. If there are no major problems with the script, it could possibly go into production early in 2013 and make the next “pilot” season.
Comic Con News: Today, at its booth at the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Entertainment revealed the latest version of Iron Man’s armor. Robert Downey, Jr. dons the new suit in Iron Man 3, which will be directed by Shane Black and will debut on May 3rd, 2013. With the tremendous success of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, Marvel is hoping for big things from Black’sIron Man 3, which is loosely based on theExtremis story arc by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov.
The new armor is sleek and features the bold dark red and gold color scheme. Marvel has it displayed in front of seven other iterations that show the evolution of Iron Man’s armor to its current state.
Shane Black will not only direct Iron Man 3, he will also write the screenplay. This week Black will be meeting with Robert Downey, Jr., who will provide his input on both the story for the third Iron Man film, which is slated to debut on May 3rd, 2013.
Appearing at the Omaha Film Festival over the past weekend, Black told the audience that Marvel Studios was not all that happy with Iron Man 2, and wanted to take the third film in the series in a different direction. According to Ain’t It Cool News, rather than having Iron Man grappling with another guy is a super-powered suit in a comic book-style slugfest, Black will be taking the franchise in a more realistic direction with Iron Man taking on “real world villains” in more of Tom Clancy-like thriller.
Black also indicated that IM3 will be a single-character story and won’t include any major crossover appearances by other Marvel heroes.
